Would the Child speak Siouan (I BELIEVE ITS CALLED) Lakota Langauge sense thats what his mother speaks or would he learn both or would it be up to Him/Her??What would happen if two Native Americans from two different Tribes got married?
Well I am Lakota I only know the most basic parts of my language (Lakota), mostly give thanks and can understand some words. My husbanad is Mohawk...I have almost the same understanding of his language. We live in Mohawk territory so it makes more sense for our children to learn Mohawk. My in-laws speak their language in varying degrees of proficiancy so again, it makes more sense. I think nowadays the child learns based on where they live and who can teach them. If only one parent speaks the language, then that is who they will learn it from. Many children have no parent to learn from as much was lost in the residential schools and 60's scoop (1960-1980's Native children stolen and placed in white homes by government policy on canada and usa). Some who lost their languages because of theis (directly or indirectly) have re-learned their language, some like me so far only know the basics and others have not even tried or don't know where to begin let alone pass it down. Many Native schools are teaching the language. What would happen if two Native Americans from two different Tribes got married?
Tribe membership usually follows the matriarchal or mother's line. What language the child learns depends on the parents. There are a lot of native Americans who have English as their primary language and go back to their native tongues when speaking to their elders.
The child would probably learn English was a smattering of other languages unless there is an elder in the household who speaks the older languages.
Well, if you are speaking of when the tribes were free, the wife and child would be raised in the tribe of the father, because just about the only way in which a warrior would meet and marry a woman from another tribe is if during a raid on another tribe he captured her and made her his wife.
